How a Felon in Louisiana Can Restore Their Voting Rights

After a felon is released from prison or has completed probation or parole, he can assert his right to vote by way of registration or re-registration.

In the state of Louisiana, a felon can make registration online, in-person or by mail.

To vote, you must meet the following criteria:

• Be a U.S. citizen and reside in Louisiana in the parish where you plan to vote
• Be at least 17 but will be 18 years old by the election date
• Be judged to be mentally competent
• Not currently incarcerated for a felony

To make it easier, individuals can register online utilizing the Secretary of State’s OVR (online voter registration) system.

Regardless of how registration is made, a proof of identification must be presented.

When completing registration online then, you must show –

• Your driver’s license number or the card number from a special identification
• A four-digit audit code – a code on the driver’s license or a special identification card that is indicated by the word “AUDIT.”
• The last 4 numerals of your social security number

If you currently do not have an ID or driver’s license, you may print out the online application and mail it to the address indicated on the form.

If registering in person, you can download an application online or pick one up at the Registrar of Voters, the Office of Motor Vehicles, any of the offices that serve food stamps, WIC or Medicaid clients, Department of Social Services or a military recruitment office.

If you show up in person and register at one of the Registrar of Voters’ offices, you must show proof of age, identity and residency.

This proof may include a birth certificate, driver’s license or similar paperwork that proves your residency, identification or current age.
