The company started its business operations in 1902 through the efforts of James Cash Penny.
As you may have guessed, the retail chain got its name from Penny himself, but they didn’t use it first.
Together with the help of former employers, they started as a dry goods shop with the name the Golden Rule.
When he was able to have the finances to buy out his business partners, he incorporated the business and called it the J.C. Penney Company in 1913.
Penney embedded his philosophical values into his company’s practices, which could be attributed to its success during his tenure at the helm.
He was the company’s president until 1917, chairman of the board of directors between 1917 and 1946, and honorary chairman from 1946 through 1958.
He had built a large corporate empire by the time he died on February 12, 1971.
The J. C. Penney Company had 1,660 stores during this time.
They have annual sales of more than $4 billion, placing it second only to Sears, Roebuck & Co. among the country’s nonfood merchants.
Considering the number of stores and total sales, it is safe to assume that this period is the company’s peak.
Penney referred to his employees as associates.
He believed that sharing the profits with his associates via ethical means is more important than achieving financial success for himself.
That is why almost all employees shared the earnings.
According to JCP’s official website, the company has over 650 stores located mainly in the USA, with selected outlets in Puerto Rico.
The retail chain offers clothing, home essentials, jewelry, and beauty products. JCPenney currently has over 50,000 associates.
